Movie Party Popcorn Bar

A DIY movie party popcorn bar is a fun addition to a movie night party, birthday party snacks, sleepover party foods for movie night, or even a watch party for your favorite TV shows or awards ceremony like an Oscars party.

It’s honestly a party buffet that works for any casual party theme!

How To Set Up A DIY Movie Party Popcorn Bar

I love doing a popcorn buffet because it’s cheap party finger foods, but you can make it a ton of fun by offering savory and sweet popcorn and including a bunch of different toppings for a fun snack mix.

And, adults enjoy this as much as kids, so don’t think this is only for kids’ party snacks!

Supplies for a Popcorn Bar

1. Popped Popcorn

I know it seems obvious, but until you start planning you really don’t think about how much popcorn you actually need for a popcorn snack table.

And, you’re going to need a lot for a popcorn party.

PRO PARTY TIP: Plan 3-5+ cups of plain popped popcorn for each person, especially if you’re allowing people to make favor bags to take home. I know it sounds like a lot, but if you imagine a measuring cup filled with popped popcorn you can see that it’s not that much.

Personally, I like to pop our popcorn the old school way like this, but that may take too long if you’re having a larger party with 10+ people. (If you’ve never made skillet popcorn, you have to make it in smaller batches so it doesn’t burn.)

In that case, I recommend buying pre-popped popcorn and NOT microwaving popcorn. (It will take forever to do enough stovetop popcorn or microwave popcorn for a party.)

PRO PARTY TIP: If you’re going to buy your popcorn, head to a store like Costco, BJs, or a party store and buy in bulk to save money. Those regular sized popcorn bags from the grocery store chip aisle will add up FAST because you’ll need so many of them.

2. Popcorn Containers

What are people going to put the popcorn in?

This is one of those questions that people forget about until it’s too late.

We’ve done this several different containers to hold the popcorn, based on how many people we’ve had at our parties — we’ve done popcorn parties for a small movie watch party to a popcorn dessert table at a cookout party and used different containers.

Popcorn Container Ideas:

  • Brown paper lunch bags – this was actually one of my favorites! We rolled down the bags and filled them with candy popcorn. It was super cute and a budget-friendly party idea!
Popcorn Party Tip: Use rolled down lunch bags for a cheap container.
  • Hot dog basketswe use these for hotdog cookouts, but I added food paper sheets like this and scooped the popcorn right into them. These work really well for a popcorn toppings bar because it’s easy to spread the toppings over the popcorn in these baskets.

  • Carnival popcorn containerthis was, hands down, the container that guests loved the most. You can get them fairly cheap in bulk and it’s fun for people to fill them up and take them home as party favors.

  • Party cups – regular party drink cups can easily double as popcorn containers.

Popcorn Party Tip: If you have limited popcorn, portion your popcorn out in containers before party guests arrive. This works really well for a kids’ party where kids usually take way more food than they end up eating.

3. Popcorn Toppings

Add in fun popcorn toppings, candy, and other popcorn mix-ins so that party guests can make their own popcorn creations.

Don’t forget to do a mix of sweet toppings and savory popcorn flavorings.

Also, people love having this popcorn butter spray because it tastes like movie popcorn butter!

4. Popcorn Party Decorations

You don’t need to go all out for a popcorn table, but it is fun to have some decorations.

We use this write-on / wipe-off flag banner all the time for our DIY parties and it worked well for our popcorn table, too.

If you’re making your own popcorn seasonings and want to have signs for the table too, check out this party pack instead.

Popcorn Bar Topping List

Popcorn toppings and things to mix-in to popcorn snack mix are only limited by your imagination!

There are so many fun things to put in popcorn or to use for popcorn toppings to create savory popcorn snack mixes or sweet popcorn ideas.

I usually create a few popcorn toppings “recipes” and write the recipes on cute signs like this. That way if some people don’t want to do random toppings they have some guidance.

Sweet Popcorn Recipes

I love sweet popcorns!

I think when people throw popcorn parties, they mostly think about savory popcorn and toppings. But, sweet popcorns are perfect for party desserts or as an addition to your other flavored popcorn.

My three favorite recipes that I’ve included here are homemade kettle corn, toffee popcorn (which is way better than caramel popcorn), and chocolate candy popcorn (in any party theme color you want!).

DIY Kettle Corn Recipe

If I had realized how easy kettle popcorn was to make at home, I would’ve started years ago!

This recipe tastes just like the kettle corn you get at fairs or festival popcorn. No toppings needed, eat it right off the popcorn bar as is!

Toffee Popcorn Instead of Caramel Corn

Ditch the tired caramel corn and go with this toffee popcorn recipe, it’s a lighter, more buttery popcorn recipe than the dark caramel corn.

This was a huge hit with our party guests and we make it regularly now for parties and holiday snacks.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED POPCORN - WHITE CHOCOLATE POPCORN OR COLORED POPCORN RECIPE

Chocolate Covered Candied Popcorn

The best party about this recipe is that you can make it colored popcorn in any color you want to match your party theme!

You can make this as white chocolate popcorn, dark chocolate popcorn or use colored melts like this for any colored popcorn to match your party theme (which I think is the fun part!).
